Description:
Persons with a bachelor`s degree or persons who are already teaching on an Internship license (waiver) are the candidates for this program. Through extensive field experiences, technology, and multicultural education included in the coursework, the students will gain the skills and abilities to teach special learners with quality.

Requirements:
<p>Program entry requirements include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Completed at least a Bachelor`s degree with 30 credit hours in a content field.</li>
<li>Hired by a school district in New Mexico to teach Special Education or able to provide documentation of a school district`s intent to hire to teach Special Education.</li>
<li> Teaching on a waiver/emergency license or eligible to apply for a New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) Internship License.</li>
<li>Teaching in a district with a mentoring program approved by NMPED.</li>
</ul>

<p>Requirements: The Alternative Licensure has a minimum of 21 credit hours required including:</p>

<li>SPED 500: Survey of Programs for Exceptional Learners </li>
<li>SPED 504: Classroom Assessment of Exceptional Learners</li>
<li>SPED 506: (Previously SPED 501): High Incidence Disabilities </li>
<li>SPED 507: (Previously SPED 502): Low Incidence Disabilities </li>
<li>SPED 509: Reading K-6 for Exceptional Learners</li>
<li>SPED 511: Reading 7-12 for Exceptional Learners</li>
<li>SPED 559: Approaches to Classroom Management of Exceptional Learners</li>
</ul>
<p>Additional Courses for Master`s Completion include:</p>

<li>SPED 510: Current Issues in Special Education (2 credits)</li>
