Description:
San Juan College offers a Physical Therapist Assistant Program in an online format, with lecture material presented online and lab classes and examinations for approximately one week per lab class each semester. The program leads to an Associate of Applied Science Degree. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation. Students who successfully complete the program will be eligible to take the computerized National Physical Therapist Assistant Licensure Examination and become licensed Physical Therapist Assistants. Students must take this exam in order to practice in most states. The fees for taking the exam in New Mexico are approximately $600. These fees are the students responsibility. Licensing requirements for PTA`s vary from state to state. This program is available by pre-selection only, and gives preference to New Mexico residents. Requirements:
1. Be admitted to San Juan College as a regular degree seeking student with Pre-Physical Therapist Assistant (P-PTA) as a declared major.<br>
2. Complete and submit application and essay to the PTA Program.<Br>
3. Have official college transcripts sent to PTA Office as well as Admissions and Records.<br>
4. Have a minimum of 20 hours of physical therapy observation in four different settings with appropriate documentation sent to the PTA Program Office.<br>
5. Submit three professional letters of reference from an related professions, counselors, instructors, supervisors, PT`s or PTA`s.<br>
6. Complete the PSB (Psychological Services Bureau) General Aptitude Exam (this exam may be taken on campus).<br>
7. Complete CPR and First Aid certification by the first clinical day and retain certification throughout the program. Both courses will be provided to students officially enrolled in the program.<br>
8. Comply with the requirements listed in the Physical Therapist Assistant Program Student Handbook.<p>
Upon review of all applicants, the top 12-15 students will be admitted for the first semester of the technical program.
